Children set about exploring the network of tiny creeks and boardwalks which criss-cross the marshes and collecting sun-bleached oyster shells from the private beach to decorate their sandcastles.
Sit back and relax to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, seagulls feasting on the morning catch and the clanking of the lines on the sailing boats as they drift past on a high tide.
Cute weatherboard cottages, ramshackle houseboats marooned on mudflats, the finest seafood (don’t forget to bring your own bread!) and jaunty nautical air greet you down at the fishing harbour.
For the adventurous there is a plethora of high-octane watersports from kayaking and paddle boarding to kite surfing and jetskiing. Or let someone else take the helm with a ride around the bay or further afield courtesy of the various local boat trips and the famous Brightlingsea foot ferry.
With everything close by, you can totally relax at Seahorse and spend the whole day in this little haven.
There is a local saying that explains the magic and mystery of Mersea Island – “Mersea Island is a place that you can leave, but it never leaves you…”
Welcome to Mersea Island
There’s a distinct sense of adventure about a holiday on Mersea Island. Approached by a causeway from the mainland, cut off at high spring tide, and just eight miles square, it’s a place where you can lose yourself in island life. Pleasures here are simple: relaxing on the beach, crabbing from the jetties, watching the activity at the boat-repair yards, taking in the dramatic, wide skies and estuary views, and, of course, feasting on fresh native oysters and local wines. The waterfront / anchorage offers a variety of restaurants and places to eat. Mersea is famous for its local seafood, which can be sampled in the famous 'Company Shed' (Bring your own Bread!) and 'The West Mersea Oyster Bar' as well as 'The Victory', 'The Fox', and 'The Coast Inn', to name but a few. Walking around the coastline, you see Jurassic cliffs, mudflats dotted with migratory birds, pastel beach huts and a vineyard and microbrewery producing a stout made with - yes you guessed it - Mersea Oysters!
